A summertime exclusive at Foxfire!
Join heritage skills crafter Andrew Lee for a hands-on workshop in traditional Appalachian tulip poplar bark basketry.
This full-day class walks students through the process from raw material to finished basket. In the morning, Andrew will bring in fresh tulip poplar logs and teach students how to remove, fold, and begin drying a piece of bark. Students will take those prepared materials home to complete a second basket on their own.
In the afternoon, students will work with a pre-cut, folded, and dried tulip poplar bark form to build a finished basket. They’ll learn how to attach the handle, add rim supports, and finish the piece with optional embellishments.
Each student will leave with one completed basket, plus the materials and first-hand knowledge needed to finish a second one at home.
No prior basketry experience is needed. This workshop is open to ages 18 and up. Class fee includes admission to walk through the Foxfire Museum before class begins.
